World data · 194 countries · updated October 2026
Youth dependency ratio by country
How many children under 15 each country has per 100 working-age adults, ranked — the number behind how much of a society goes into raising the next generation.
Central African Republic leads the 194 countries ranked here on youth dependency ratio at 99 / 100, followed by Somalia at 92 / 100 and Chad at 89 / 100. The median country is Malaysia at 34 / 100, against a world average of 39 / 100.
What this measures
The number of people aged 0–14 per 100 people aged 15–64.
What it does not
It treats everyone aged 15–64 as working and everyone under 15 as dependent, which is a simplification in both directions.

Bars are scaled across the full observed range (16 / 100 to 99 / 100), not to 100%, so the real spread is visible.
How the values are spread
Where the 194 countries fall
The range from 16 / 100 to 99 / 100 is split into 10 equal bands, and each bar counts the countries in one band.
| Band | Countries | Including |
|---|---|---|
| 16.0 to 24.3 per 100 | 50 | Bahrain, Romania, Czechia and 47 more |
| 24.3 to 32.6 per 100 | 42 | Iran, Georgia, Colombia and 39 more |
| 32.6 to 40.9 per 100 | 25 | Libya, Lebanon, Ecuador and 22 more |
| 40.9 to 49.2 per 100 | 17 | Turkmenistan, Haiti, Algeria and 14 more |
| 49.2 to 57.5 per 100 | 12 | Kiribati, Lesotho, Marshall Islands and 9 more |
| 57.5 to 65.8 per 100 | 18 | Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan and 15 more |
| 65.8 to 74.1 per 100 | 17 | Benin, Burkina Faso, Yemen and 14 more |
| 74.1 to 82.4 per 100 | 6 | Mozambique, Tanzania, Mauritania and 3 more |
| 82.4 to 90.7 per 100 | 5 | Chad, DR Congo, Mali and 2 more |
| 90.7 to 99.0 per 100 | 2 | Central African Republic, Somalia |
How this is built: each band is one tenth of the gap between the lowest and highest value; a country is counted in the band its value falls in, and the top band includes the highest value. Countries with no comparable figure are left out. Chart drawn with Apache ECharts.

Reading the table
The youth dependency ratio answers a question the raw child count cannot: how much weight is each working adult carrying?
DR Congo has 88 children under 15 for every 100 working-age adults. South Korea has 16. That means a Congolese worker supports roughly five and a half times as many children as a Korean one, before anything else is accounted for.
High youth dependency is not a failure state. It is the front half of a demographic dividend: those children become workers, and if the education and jobs exist when they arrive, the ratio flips into the single largest growth opportunity a country ever gets. Every East Asian economic miracle ran through exactly this window.
The countries to watch are the ones with high youth dependency and low secondary completion — Mozambique, Ethiopia, Afghanistan. They have the children. Whether the dividend arrives depends entirely on what happens in the classrooms over the next fifteen years.

Frequently asked
What is the youth dependency ratio?
The number of children under 15 per 100 working-age adults. It measures how much of a society's productive capacity goes into raising the next generation.
Which country has the highest youth dependency?
DR Congo, at about 88 children under 15 per 100 working-age adults.
Is high youth dependency bad?
Not inherently. It is the first half of a demographic dividend — those children become workers. Whether it pays off depends on whether education and jobs exist when they arrive.
How many countries are in this table?
This table ranks 194 countries with a comparable figure, out of the 194 countries profiled on AlphaBetaMinds. The countries in this table hold about 98% of the world population.
