Compulsory years of education by country

How many years of schooling are legally compulsory in each of 194 countries — a five-to-fifteen-year spread that shapes a whole childhood.

The short answer

Israel leads the 194 countries ranked here on compulsory years of schooling at 15 years, followed by Tonga at 15 years and Mexico at 15 years. The median country is Kyrgyzstan at 10 years, against a world average of 10 years.

What this measures

The number of years of education that are legally compulsory, from UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

What it does not

Legally compulsory and actually completed are different numbers. Read this alongside secondary completion rates, which are often far lower.

The bottom of the table

Myanmar 5 years
Bangladesh 5 years
Madagascar 5 years
Suriname 6 years
Guyana 6 years

Bars are scaled across the full observed range (5 years to 15 years), not to 100%, so the real spread is visible.

How the values are spread

Where the 194 countries fall

The range from 5 years to 15 years is split into 10 equal bands, and each bar counts the countries in one band.

Number of countries in each band of compulsory years of schooling
BandCountriesIncluding
5.0 to 6.0 years 3 Madagascar, Bangladesh, Myanmar
6.0 to 7.0 years 14 Guinea, Benin, Rwanda and 11 more
7.0 to 8.0 years 9 Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique and 6 more
8.0 to 9.0 years 15 Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan and 12 more
9.0 to 10.0 years 45 Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon and 42 more
10.0 to 11.0 years 33 Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Chad and 30 more
11.0 to 12.0 years 19 Ghana, Seychelles, Malta and 16 more
12.0 to 13.0 years 27 Kenya, Mauritius, Turkey and 24 more
13.0 to 14.0 years 18 Philippines, Marshall Islands, Germany and 15 more
14.0 to 15.0 years 11 Israel, Tonga, Mexico and 8 more

How this is built: each band is one tenth of the gap between the lowest and highest value; a country is counted in the band its value falls in, and the top band includes the highest value. Countries with no comparable figure are left out. Chart drawn with Apache ECharts.

Reading the table

A child in Mexico is legally required to be in school for fifteen years. A child in Bangladesh or Myanmar is required to be there for five. That is a three-fold difference in the mandated length of childhood education, between countries at broadly similar income levels in some cases.

The number to distrust here is the high end. Mexico mandates fifteen years and records a secondary completion rate of about 65%. A legal requirement without the school places, teachers and household income to support it is an aspiration, not a policy.

The number to respect is the middle. Nine to twelve years, actually delivered, describes almost every country with strong education outcomes.

Iraq is the outlier worth flagging: six compulsory years against an under-15 share of 37%, the widest gap of that kind on the list — a very young country with one of the shortest legal schooling requirements.

Frequently asked

How many years of school are compulsory?

Between five and fifteen depending on the country. Mexico mandates the most at fifteen years; Bangladesh and Myanmar the fewest at five.

Which country has the longest compulsory education?

Mexico, at fifteen years, followed by Brazil and Argentina at fourteen.

Does more compulsory schooling mean better outcomes?

Not reliably. Mexico mandates fifteen years but records about 65% secondary completion, while several countries with nine to twelve compulsory years exceed 90%. Delivery matters more than the legal requirement.

How many countries are in this table?

This table ranks 194 countries with a comparable figure, out of the 194 countries profiled on AlphaBetaMinds. The countries in this table hold about 98% of the world population.
