Median age by country

The median age of 194 countries, ranked from oldest to youngest, and what it means for the generation mix in each one.

The short answer

Monaco leads the 194 countries ranked here on median age at 53 years, followed by Japan at 49 years and San Marino at 49 years. The median country is Argentina at 32 years, against a world average of 31 years.

What this measures

The age that divides a population exactly in half — half are older, half are younger.

What it does not

A single median hides the shape of the distribution. Two countries with the same median can have very different numbers of children and pensioners.

The bottom of the table

Somalia 16 years
Chad 16 years
Mali 16 years
Angola 16 years

Bars are scaled across the full observed range (15 years to 53 years), not to 100%, so the real spread is visible.

How the values are spread

Where the 194 countries fall

The range from 15 years to 53 years is split into 10 equal bands, and each bar counts the countries in one band.

Number of countries in each band of median age
BandCountriesIncluding
15.0 to 18.8 years 18 Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Malawi and 15 more
18.8 to 22.6 years 33 Namibia, Gabon, Lesotho and 30 more
22.6 to 26.4 years 17 Philippines, Bolivia, Nicaragua and 14 more
26.4 to 30.2 years 25 Cape Verde, Morocco, Oman and 22 more
30.2 to 34.0 years 15 Turkey, Tunisia, Qatar and 12 more
34.0 to 37.8 years 20 North Korea, Singapore, Armenia and 17 more
37.8 to 41.6 years 29 Malta, United Kingdom, Denmark and 26 more
41.6 to 45.4 years 26 South Korea, Spain, Bulgaria and 23 more
45.4 to 49.2 years 10 Japan, San Marino, Italy and 7 more
49.2 to 53.0 years 1 Monaco

How this is built: each band is one tenth of the gap between the lowest and highest value; a country is counted in the band its value falls in, and the top band includes the highest value. Countries with no comparable figure are left out. Chart drawn with Apache ECharts.

Reading the table

Median age is the fastest way to picture a country. Japan's is 49: half of Japan is approaching or past fifty. DR Congo's and Uganda's is 16: half of each country has never been an adult.

A 33-year spread between two countries in the same year is one of the largest gaps in any demographic statistic. It means that the phrase "young people" describes about 8% of one country and about 50% of another.

For anyone working with Generation Alpha and Generation Beta, the median age tells you how much competition for national attention those cohorts have. In a country with a median age of 16, children are the main story: policy, budgets and infrastructure are built around them because they are the majority. In a country with a median age of 49, children are a minority interest competing with pensions and healthcare — which is exactly why school closures pass so easily in ageing countries and are politically impossible in young ones.

Frequently asked

Which country has the oldest population?

Monaco, with a median age of about 53. Japan is the oldest large country at about 49.

Which country has the youngest population?

DR Congo and Uganda, both with a median age of about 16.

What is the world median age?

About 31 years.

Why is median age used instead of average age?

The median is not distorted by extreme values and is the standard demographic measure. It answers a simpler question: what age splits this population in half?

How many countries are in this table?

This table ranks 194 countries with a comparable figure, out of the 194 countries profiled on AlphaBetaMinds. The countries in this table hold about 98% of the world population.
