Generation Z population by country
How many Gen Z (born 1997–2009) live in each of 194 countries, mid-2026: ranked, with the share of the population and the Pew 1997–2012 count.
India leads the 194 countries ranked here on generation z population at 331.5 million, followed by China at 211.3 million and Pakistan at 62.3 million. The median country is Central African Republic at 1.5 million.
What this measures
The number of people born from 1997 to 2009 who were alive in each country on 1 July 2026, summed from UN World Population Prospects 2024 single-year ages (medium variant). That is half of age 16, all of ages 17 to 28 and half of age 29, because an age on 1 July covers parts of two birth years.
What it does not
Births are assumed to be spread evenly across each year, so the two half-ages are approximations. People are counted where they live now, not where they were born. The share column divides by the population used everywhere else on this site, which for some countries is an older UN estimate, so it can differ from the UN's own 2026 share by up to about 1.5 points. On Pew Research's 1997–2012 boundary every figure is larger; see Generation Z for why this site stops at 2009.
The bottom of the table
Bars are scaled across the full observed range (1,890 to 331.5 million), not to 100%, so the real spread is visible.
How the values are spread
Where the 194 countries fall
The range from 1,890 to 331.5 million is split into 10 equal bands, and each bar counts the countries in one band.
Most countries sit in one band because a few very large values stretch the range. The ranking table below shows the differences within it.
| Band | Countries | Including |
|---|---|---|
| 0m to 33m | 185 | Mexico, Philippines, Egypt and 182 more |
| 33m to 66m | 7 | Pakistan, United States, Nigeria and 4 more |
| 66m to 99m | 0 | — |
| 99m to 133m | 0 | — |
| 133m to 166m | 0 | — |
| 166m to 199m | 0 | — |
| 199m to 232m | 1 | China |
| 232m to 265m | 0 | — |
| 265m to 298m | 0 | — |
| 298m to 332m | 1 | India |
How this is built: each band is one tenth of the gap between the lowest and highest value; a country is counted in the band its value falls in, and the top band includes the highest value. Countries with no comparable figure are left out. Chart drawn with Apache ECharts.

Reading the table
This table uses this site's Generation Z boundary, born 1997 to 2009: Pew Research's start year and McCrindle's end year, so that Generation Alpha can begin in 2010. On that boundary the world had about 1.64 billion Gen Zers on 1 July 2026, roughly 19.7% of its 8.30 billion people. Pew Research runs the cohort to 2012. Counted the same way (half of age 13, all of ages 14 to 28, half of age 29), Pew's Gen Z is about 2.05 billion, roughly 24.7% of the world. The often-quoted "2 billion Gen Z" is the Pew figure, not this one.
India holds about 331 million and China about 211 million, together about a third of the world's Gen Z. Then the table drops sharply: Pakistan (62 million), the United States (60 million), Nigeria (60 million) and Indonesia (58 million) are close together, and no other country reaches 45 million.
Share tells a different story. Gen Z is about 29% of Syria and about 27% of Ethiopia, Kenya and Guatemala, but under 13% of Japan and Bulgaria. A high share usually means high fertility in the 2000s and a young population overall; a low share usually goes with an older population. Read it next to the median age table.

Frequently asked
How many Gen Z are there in the world?
About 1.64 billion people born from 1997 to 2009 were alive on 1 July 2026, roughly 19.7% of the world's 8.30 billion people, from UN World Population Prospects 2024. On Pew Research's wider 1997–2012 definition, counted the same way, the figure is about 2.05 billion.
Which country has the most Gen Z?
India, with about 331 million people born from 1997 to 2009, followed by China with about 211 million. Pakistan, the United States, Nigeria and Indonesia each have about 58 to 62 million.
Which country has the highest share of Gen Z?
Syria, where about 29% of the population was born from 1997 to 2009. Timor-Leste, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Guatemala and Kenya are all close to 27%.
Why does this table use 1997–2009 and not 1997–2012?
This site takes Pew Research's start year (1997) and McCrindle's end year (2009), so that Generation Alpha starts in 2010. Pew ends Gen Z in 2012. Each country page gives both figures.
Why do the country figures not add up to the world total?
These 194 countries cover about 98% of the world population and hold about 1.61 billion of the 1.64 billion Gen Zers. The rest live in territories without a full profile on this site.
How many countries are in this table?
This table ranks 194 countries with a comparable figure, out of the 194 countries profiled on AlphaBetaMinds. The countries in this table hold about 98% of the world population.
