Teaching an AI-native generation

School years, homework loads, AI policy, classroom strategy and cohort planning for Alpha and Beta intakes.

Quick answer

Schools face two simultaneous shifts: AI arriving mid-schooling for Generation Alpha, and falling birth cohorts shrinking intakes from about 2031 in most high and middle income countries.

Two things are happening to schools at once, and they are usually discussed separately.

The first is AI, which arrived in the middle of Generation Alpha's schooling and will be present from day one for Generation Beta. The second is demographic: birth cohorts are falling in most countries, so reception intakes start shrinking around 2031.

One is a pedagogy problem. The other is a budget problem. Both land on the same schools.

What we cover here

  • AI policy that survives its first dispute
  • Assessment redesign rather than tool bans
  • Cohort and intake forecasting
  • Homework, attendance and workload arithmetic
  • What actually holds attention in an Alpha classroom

Frequently asked

Should schools ban AI?

Bans without assessment redesign do not hold. The approaches that work assess the process — drafts, verbal defence, class-specific tasks — rather than restricting the tool.

Will school rolls fall?

In most high and middle income countries, yes. Falling births from the early 2020s reach reception classes from about 2031.

What is the ten-minute homework rule?

A widely used benchmark of roughly ten minutes of homework per school year per night — 60 minutes in Year 6, 90 in Year 9.
