Do noise level charts work?
They work as a shared vocabulary that lets a teacher set an expectation in three words instead of a sentence. They do not work as a display that is never referred to, which is the most common way they are used.
How do you bring the level back down?
With a pre-agreed signal that is quieter than the room, not louder. Raising your voice above group work reliably raises the room, which is the most common self-defeating habit in this area.
What about pupils who find noise difficult?
A designated quieter place or ear defenders available without asking. For a pupil with sensory sensitivity or a hearing impairment, a noisy group task is a different task from the one everyone else is doing.
