Phonics Progress Tracker

Progress against the expected sequence, with the gap between decoding and comprehension made visible.

Quick answer

Phonics tracking measures decoding, and decoding is only half of reading — a pupil can be ahead on graphemes and still understand little, which is why blending accuracy and comprehension have to be recorded separately from the grapheme count.

Frequently asked

What should I do about a pupil falling behind in phonics?

Daily keep-up starting immediately rather than at the next review point, because every later grapheme depends on the earlier ones. Waiting is the response most associated with the gap widening.

Is phonics enough to teach reading?

No, and the evidence does not claim it is. Systematic phonics is strongly supported for decoding; comprehension additionally requires vocabulary, background knowledge and language comprehension, which phonics does not address.

Why track blending separately?

Because knowing a grapheme and being able to blend with it are different skills that fail independently. A pupil who knows 40 graphemes and cannot blend needs different teaching from one who knows 20 and blends well.
