Class Cohort Tracker

One cohort followed across years rather than one year group compared across cohorts — which is what most school data does instead.

Quick answer

Following one cohort across years answers a different question from comparing this year's year group with last year's: the first shows what happened to a group of children, and the second mostly shows that cohorts differ.

Frequently asked

Why track a cohort rather than a year group?

Because year-on-year comparisons of the same year group confound the teaching with the intake. Cohorts genuinely differ, and a fall in Year 4 results can mean a different set of children rather than a change in anything the school did.

What does a single-year dip usually mean?

More often something about that year than about those children — a staffing change, an extended absence, a disrupted term. A single point in a line is rarely worth acting on; a two-year trend is.

What is the most important line on a chart like this?

The gap between the whole cohort and the disadvantaged pupils within it. It is usually more stable than anyone expects, and stability there is the finding most worth confronting.
