Parenting Generation Alpha and Generation Beta

Screen rules, first phones, sleep, allowance and the decisions that actually matter, with the numbers behind each one.

Quick answer

The parenting decisions that matter most for Alpha and Beta children are: what age a personal device arrives, whether devices leave the bedroom at night, whether rules are written and consistent, and whether adults follow the same rules they set.

There is no shortage of parenting advice about screens. There is a serious shortage of numbers.

This hub tries to give you the arithmetic — what four hours a day actually adds up to over a childhood, what a phone at eleven means in practice, what the evidence supports and what is just a strong opinion repeated often.

What we cover here

  • Screen time by age, with the guidance and what it is based on
  • First phone readiness, scored on behaviour rather than age
  • Sleep, which is where the strongest evidence sits
  • Money, chores and independence
  • Written family agreements, and why verbal rules fail

How to Cut Screen Time Without a Fight

Most screen-time reductions collapse on day three. Here is why, and the sequence that survives it.

Frequently asked

What is the right age for a first phone?

The evidence supports readiness signals over a fixed age. The strongest predictors are whether the child would tell you about something upsetting, and whether they already follow agreed limits without conflict.

How much screen time is too much?

Common guidance is no solo screens under 18 months, up to an hour for ages 2–5, and consistent limits for older children. The hour before bed matters more than the daily total.

Do screen rules actually work?

Consistent, written, mutually-agreed rules work. Inconsistent rules are worse than lenient ones, because the child learns the rule depends on your mood.
