Ireland Childcare Costs After Budget 2027: Is Your Bill Really Falling to €550?
From September 2027 the NCS subsidy rises to €2.50 an hour and Core Funding fee caps fall. Who gets the €550 cap, and what it means for your monthly bill.
From September 2027 the National Childcare Scheme universal subsidy rises from €2.14 to €2.50 an hour for children up to senior infants, and the maximum weekly fee at Core Funding providers falls in every hours band, from €280 to €250 for a 40-49 hour place. A family using 45 hours at the capped fee then pays at most €550 a 4-week month instead of €735.
From September 2027 two things change in Irish childcare. The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) universal subsidy rises from €2.14 to €2.50 an hour for children in early years, junior infants and senior infants, and the maximum fee a Core Funding provider can charge falls in every hours band. For a full-time 45-hour place charged at the cap, the parent's share falls from €735 to €550 a month, where gov.ie counts a month as 4 weeks. Whether your own bill falls that far depends on your fee, your hours and your provider. The Ireland childcare cost calculator estimates it.
The new fee caps
These are the maximum weekly fees for providers in Core Funding, from the Department of Children, Disability and Equality's Budget 2027 childcare details (published 9 October 2026, updated 15 October 2026):
| Hours a week | Maximum weekly fee now | From September 2027 | Universal subsidy now | From September 2027 (up to senior infants) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10 | €56 | €50 | €10.70 (5 hours) | €12.50 (5 hours) |
| 10 to under 20 | €112 | €100 | €32.10 (15 hours) | €37.50 (15 hours) |
| 20 to under 30 | €168 | €150 | €53.50 (25 hours) | €62.50 (25 hours) |
| 30 to under 40 | €224 | €200 | €74.90 (35 hours) | €87.50 (35 hours) |
| 40 to under 50 | €280 | €250 | €96.30 (45 hours) | €112.50 (45 hours) |
| 50 or more | €336 | €300 | €96.30 (45 hours) | €112.50 (45 hours) |
The subsidy column shows gov.ie's example hours for each band. The subsidy is paid per hour, up to 45 hours a week when the parents work, study or train, and up to 20 hours when they do not (Citizens Information).
Where the €550 comes from
The government's headline case is a child up to senior infants in a 45-hour place charged at the full cap:
- now: €280 fee minus €96.30 subsidy = €183.70 a week, or €734.80 per 4 weeks;
- from September 2027: €250 fee minus €112.50 subsidy = €137.50 a week, or €550 per 4 weeks.
Because gov.ie's "month" is 4 weeks, €137.50 a week is about €596 a calendar month. That matters if your provider bills by calendar month: your invoice will not say €550.
gov.ie's other examples:
- a 25-hour place at the cap falls from €458 to no more than €350 per 4 weeks;
- a 50-hour place falls from about €959 to no more than €750;
- a child in first class or older using 45 hours in the holidays pays no more than €153.70 a week instead of €183.70, because the cap falls but the subsidy stays at €2.14;
- a family paying the median fee of €800 per 4 weeks for 45 hours, already under the new cap, goes from €414.80 to €350, only because the subsidy rises.
Who does not get the cap
- Providers outside Core Funding. The caps apply only to Core Funding Partner Services. A provider outside it can charge what it likes, and Citizens Information says the universal subsidy is paid through Core Funding services.
- Families whose fee is already below the cap. Their saving comes only from the higher subsidy: 36 cent an hour, at most €16.20 a week for 45 hours.
- Older children. From first class up, the subsidy stays at €2.14 an hour.
The department said more than 20% of providers will have to cut at least one fee. Core Funding for the next programme year rises by more than €170 million, to over €650 million.
Income-assessed subsidy
If your family's reckonable income is under €68,000, the income-assessed NCS subsidy may be worth more than the universal one. You cannot get both, but you can choose the better one. From September 2027 the lower income threshold rises from €34,000 to €38,500, so more families get the maximum rate. This calculator does not model the income-assessed subsidy; use the official NCS Childcare Subsidy Calculator at ncs.gov.ie for that.
What the calculator assumes
- You enter your provider's full fee before the subsidy, per calendar month.
- Your provider keeps its current fee, cut to the new cap if it is above it.
- Your hours fall in the same band in September 2027.
- ECCE hours, the sponsor subsidy and AIM supports are left out.
It is an estimate, not your award. Your Parent Statement shows the fee and subsidy your provider actually applies.
