Digital childhood: screens, AI and what it costs

Screen time arithmetic, online safety, AI companions and the trade-offs nobody quantifies.

Quick answer

The screen-time findings with the strongest evidence concern sleep, not attention or mood. Evening screen use delays sleep onset consistently across studies, and sleep loss then explains much of what is often attributed directly to screens.

Screen time is discussed almost entirely in moral terms and almost never in arithmetic ones.

Four hours a day from age three to eighteen is 21,900 hours. That is the entire waking life of a four-year-old, twice over. Whether that matters is a real question. How much it adds up to is not — it is just multiplication, and almost nobody does it.

What we cover here

  • Lifetime screen hour arithmetic
  • The sleep evidence, which is the strongest
  • Online safety, including the settings that actually matter
  • AI companions and boundary design
  • What changes when families reduce, and on what timeline
