How old a child must be to use ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Snapchat My AI, Copilot, Character.AI and others, and what each does for teens.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI, Snapchat My AI, Grok and Perplexity set 13 as their minimum age, with parental permission needed for under-18s on ChatGPT and Grok. Claude and Replika are 18+, and Character.AI ended chat for under-18s in November 2025.

How old do you have to be to use ChatGPT?
13, and under-18s need a parent's or guardian's permission. When ChatGPT is not confident of a user's age it defaults to its teen experience, and parents can link accounts to set quiet hours and other controls.
Can under-18s use Character.AI?
Not for chat. Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18s by 25 November 2025, and verified under-18s now have a read-only mode. The company filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 to sell itself.
Can a child under 13 use Gemini?
Only if a parent enables it on a Family Link supervised account, on mobile, and not in the EU, Switzerland or the UK.
Are there laws about AI chatbots and children?
California's SB 243 has applied since 1 January 2026 and New York has a companion-chatbot law; the US Federal Trade Commission opened an inquiry into seven chatbot companies in September 2025, and the UK has announced plans but not passed rules.
