Displacement hypothesis
Displacement hypothesis is the idea that screen use harms children mainly by replacing something else, rather than through direct effect.
Why it matters practically
Under this model the question is not "how many hours" but "instead of what".
Two hours replacing outdoor play, sleep or reading is a different proposition from two hours replacing television. This is why the most useful family question is what was displaced, not what the total was.
