Cut-off date
Definition
Cut-off date is the date that decides which school year a child enters.
Why it produces the relative age effect
A child born the day before the cut-off and one born the day after are twelve months apart in age and in the same or adjacent year groups. See [[Relative age effect]].
Cut-off dates differ by country and sometimes by region, which is why a birth year alone does not determine a school year.
