Cohort life expectancy
Cohort life expectancy is the average lifespan actually achieved by people born in a particular year.
Against period life expectancy
The figure usually quoted is period life expectancy: what would happen if today's mortality rates held for a whole lifetime. They will not — they keep improving.
Cohort life expectancy is therefore always higher. A child born today will very probably outlive their country's published figure. This distinction is the single most common misreading of life expectancy.
