Generation Alpha: how the 2010–2024 cohort actually thinks
Attention, sleep, language, friendship and identity in the first generation raised on touchscreens from infancy.
Generation Alpha (born 2010–2024) is the first cohort raised with touchscreens, algorithmic feeds and voice assistants from infancy. The research questions that matter most are attention, sleep, language acquisition and how friendship works when most of it happens inside games.
Most of what is written about Generation Alpha is either alarm or dismissal. Neither is useful to a parent deciding whether to buy a phone, or a teacher planning a term.
This hub collects what we can actually say with evidence, what is still contested, and what is simply unknown. Where a claim rests on a single study, we say so. Where the honest answer is that nobody knows yet, we say that too.
What we cover here
- Attention and how short-form media interacts with it
- Sleep, the single most consistently supported area of screen research
- Language, slang cycles and how vocabulary spreads
- Friendship, gaming as social infrastructure, and online-only relationships
- Identity formation when everything is recorded

Frequently asked
Is Generation Alpha's attention span really shorter?
Measured sustained attention has declined on some tasks, but the research does not support a simple causal story. Sleep loss explains more of the variance than screen time does in most studies.
What is the strongest finding in screen research?
The link between evening screen use and delayed sleep onset. It is the most replicated result, and it is the one with the clearest practical fix.
Are gaming friendships real friendships?
The evidence says yes for children who also have in-person contact. The concern in the literature is displacement, not the online relationship itself.
