The short answer

Generation Alpha is aged 2 to 16 in 2026, spanning birth years 2010 to 2024, which puts children who cannot yet speak in sentences and children sitting school examinations inside the same cohort.

Generation Alpha is 2 to 16 in 2026. That fourteen-year spread is the single most useful fact about the cohort, and the one most often ignored.

Why the spread breaks most claims about them

A sixteen-year-old and a two-year-old have almost nothing in common as consumers, learners, or users of anything. They are the same generation because a demographer drew a line, and that is the only sense in which the statement is true.

"Gen Alpha prefers video to text." The two-year-old cannot read. The sixteen-year-old is sitting written examinations. Any measurement here is a measurement of the age you sampled.

"Gen Alpha has never known a world without AI." The 2010 cohort was twelve when consumer AI arrived in late 2022 — most of their schooling predates it. The 2024 cohort will never remember its absence. Both are Alpha.

"Gen Alpha is the first tablet generation." Closer to true at the young end than the old. The oldest Alphas were toddlers before the iPad was in most homes; the youngest were born into households where it was furniture.

The boundary, which is unusually clean

Unlike the Gen Z line — where two reputable sources disagree by three years — the Alpha/Beta boundary is not contested. Generation Beta opened on 1 January 2025. A child born on 31 December 2024 is Alpha; a child born the next day is Beta.

The other end is less settled. This site uses 2010 as the first Alpha year, following McCrindle. Pew Research Center runs Gen Z to 2012 and would put the 2010, 2011 and 2012 birth years in Gen Z instead. That is three birth years — roughly 400 million people — moving between cohorts depending on which source you read.

What happens next, in order

  • 2028 — the oldest Alphas turn 18. The cohort starts having adults in it.
  • 2032 — at a typical start age of 22, the first Alphas reach the workforce.
  • 2042 — the youngest turn 18, and the cohort is finally all adult.

Until 2042, every claim about "Generation Alpha" describes a group that still contains children. That is a sixteen-year window in which the cohort cannot be surveyed as a whole, and it has only just begun.
