Under-five mortality
Under-five mortality is the probability that a newborn dies before their fifth birthday, per 1,000 live births.
The headline number
Global under-five mortality has fallen by more than half since 2000. It remains the clearest good-news statistic in demography and one of the least reported.
For Generation Beta it means a larger share of births survive to become a counted cohort member than for any previous generation.
