Total fertility rate
Total fertility rate is the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime at current age-specific birth rates.
Why 2.1 matters
Replacement level is about 2.1 children per woman — two to replace the parents, plus a fraction to account for children who do not survive to reproductive age.
The world sits at roughly 2.2 and falling. South Korea, at 0.72, is the lowest recorded for a large country.
Below replacement, each generation is smaller than the one before it. That is the single biggest structural fact about Generation Beta.
