Replacement level fertility
Replacement level fertility is the fertility rate at which a population exactly replaces itself, conventionally 2.1 children per woman.
Why 2.1 and not 2
Two children replace two parents, so the intuitive figure is 2.0. The extra 0.1 accounts for children who do not survive to reproductive age, and for the fact that slightly more boys are born than girls.
In countries with higher child mortality the replacement level is higher — closer to 2.5 or 3.0 in the highest-mortality settings.
What it does not mean
Falling below 2.1 does not mean a population starts shrinking immediately. [[Population momentum]] keeps it growing for a generation or more. See [[Total fertility rate]].
