Glossary
Infant mortality rate
Infant mortality rate is deaths before the first birthday, per 1,000 live births.
Why it appears here
Every cohort estimate on this site subtracts infant mortality, because a cohort counts people who are alive, not births.
It is also the single most sensitive indicator of a health system, which is why it is used as a proxy for development far outside demography.
