Internal linking
Definition
Internal linking is links from one page of a site to another.
The shape that matters
Hub to child, child back to hub, and child to sibling. It is the structure that separates a legitimate programmatic set from a doorway farm, and it is what search engines use to infer which pages a site considers important.
An orphan page with a sitemap entry is still an orphan.
