Behaviour Antecedent Log

What came immediately before a difficult moment, recorded consistently — the part of an ABC record that is usually missing.

Quick answer

In A-B-C records the antecedent is the part most often left blank, and recorded in the moment across 39 episodes it typically shows one category at 23% and physical state — hunger, tiredness, illness — at about 15%.

Frequently asked

What is an ABC chart?

A structured record of what happened immediately before a behaviour, what the behaviour was, and what happened afterwards. It is standard practice in schools and in behaviour support, and its whole value depends on the first column being filled in honestly and at the time.

How long should I record for?

Two weeks of consistent recording generally shows more than two months of occasional recording. If nothing is emerging after a fortnight, the categories may be too broad — split the biggest one into two and continue.

Does a pattern tell me why?

It tells you when, which is not the same thing. A pattern around transitions might be about the transition, about the activity being ended, about the one being started, or about noise in the corridor between them. The pattern narrows the question for the professional; it does not answer it.
