Bystander Response Planner
What to actually say when witnessing something — rehearsed in advance, because nobody improvises well in the moment.
Bystanders measurably change bullying outcomes and the barrier is rarely willingness — it is not having a line ready, which is why rehearsed phrases across four situations work better than being told to stand up for people.

Frequently asked
Does bystander intervention actually work?
It is one of the better-supported findings in the bullying literature: peer intervention shortens incidents and reduces recurrence more reliably than most adult-led responses. The difficulty is that most bystanders freeze, which is a preparation problem rather than a character one.
What if it is not safe to say anything?
Then it is not safe, and getting an adult is the right answer rather than a fallback. Physical or escalating situations are not the place for a script.
What helps most afterwards?
Sitting with the person and saying it was not their fault, without advice about what they should have done differently. Children who are targeted consistently describe unsolicited advice as the least helpful response they receive.
