Screen time
Screen time is time spent looking at a screen — a term so broad that it is nearly useless without qualification.
Why the term is a problem
A video call with a grandparent, a maths app, a Roblox session with friends and two hours of autoplay short-form video are all "screen time". They have almost nothing in common.
The research that replicates well tends to separate content, context and timing. The finding with the strongest support is about timing: screen use in the hour before bed delays sleep onset.
