Dependency ratio
Dependency ratio is the number of people outside working age relative to those inside it, usually expressed per hundred.
The two halves
Youth dependency counts under-15s. Old-age dependency counts over-65s. Together they give the total dependency ratio.
A falling youth ratio and a rising old-age ratio is the demographic story of most of the world for the next fifty years — and it is the reason Generation Alpha and Generation Beta will likely work longer than any generation before them.
