The short answer

Nobody officially records the first baby of a generation. The most widely reported "first Gen Beta baby" in India is Frankie Remruatdika Zadeng, reported born at 12:03 am on 1 January 2025 in Aizawl, Mizoram. In Australia a baby named Remi was reported born at 12.05 am in Port Macquarie, which, because of the time difference, was hours earlier. The first Gen Beta babies turn two on 1 January 2027.

Short answer: there is no official "first" baby of a generation. Nobody keeps a register of it, and every place on Earth reaches midnight at a different moment. What exists are local news reports from 1 January 2025, each naming the first birth in its own town, state or country. We list them below with where each was reported, and say plainly where they disagree.

The babies born that night start Generation Beta, which the research firm McCrindle defines as "those born between 2025 and 2039". McCrindle also named the generation before it: "We named them Alpha and Beta." On 1 January 2027 the first of them turn two.

The two Indian reports do not agree on the hospital of the 12:03 am birth, so we cannot say which is right. The US report is a local first only.

Why "first" depends on the time zone

Each of these births happened just after midnight local time. New South Wales was on Australian Eastern Daylight Time in January, UTC+11, while India is on Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30. So Remi's reported 12.05 am birth in Port Macquarie came about five and a half hours before the 12:03 am births in Aizawl.

We found no confirmed report of a named first Gen Beta baby from any place that reaches midnight before eastern Australia, so the true first birth of 2025 is unknown.

What changes when they turn two

On 1 January 2027 the oldest members of Generation Beta turn two. There is no milestone attached to the date beyond the birthday itself: the generation keeps growing until the last babies of 2039 are born. For how big it may get, see how big will Gen Beta be?, and for where its babies are being born, where Gen Beta is being born.

Two dates around that birthday:

  • Chinese zodiac. The Hong Kong Observatory's calendar puts the start of the Year of the Goat on 6 February 2027. Babies born from 1 January to 5 February 2027 are still in the Year of the Horse, which began on 17 February 2026.
  • Trump Accounts (US). US citizen children born from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2028 with a Social Security number can get a one-off $1,000 federal pilot contribution, but a parent must elect it with IRS Form 4547 (IRS). The first Gen Beta babies are inside that window. Check eligibility with our Trump account eligibility checker.
