When Does Gen Beta Start and End? The Dates, and Why They Are Contested

Generation Beta runs from 2025 to 2039. Here is where that boundary comes from, who set it, and why a child born in 2024 is a genuinely awkward case.

The short answer

Generation Beta starts on 1 January 2025 and ends on 31 December 2039. The boundary was set by demographer Mark McCrindle, who also named Generation Alpha. It is a research convention, not an official designation, and no statistical agency ratifies it.

Generation Beta: 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2039. Fifteen years, the same span as Generation Alpha.

That is the short answer. The longer one is more useful, because the boundary is doing more work than most people realise.

Who decided

Mark McCrindle, an Australian demographer, named Generation Alpha in 2008 and Generation Beta in late 2024. No government, statistical agency or international body ratifies these names. They are a research convention that the press adopted because it needed a label.

This matters when you compare numbers across sources. Pew Research Center, the other widely-cited authority, ends Generation Z in 2012 and does not define Generation Beta at all. Under Pew, a child born in 2011 is Gen Z. Under McCrindle, they are Generation Alpha.

Three birth years contain roughly 400 million people. Which framework you use moves the cohort total more than any modelling choice.

Why the Greek alphabet

The Latin one ran out. After Generation Z there was nowhere to go, and "Generation AA" reads like a spreadsheet column.

McCrindle's stated reasoning was that these cohorts are not a continuation of the twentieth-century sequence but the start of something else — the first generations shaped entirely by technological integration. Restarting the alphabet was a way of saying so.

Whether you find that persuasive is a matter of taste. What matters practically is that the sequence is now Greek, so the cohort after Beta would be Gamma, running 2040 to 2054 if the fifteen-year pattern holds.

The awkward cases

A child born on 31 December 2024 is Generation Alpha. A child born on 1 January 2025 is Generation Beta. They will go to school together, play the same games, use the same devices and be indistinguishable in every way that matters.

That is not a flaw in the framework so much as a reminder of what the framework is for. Generational boundaries are useful for describing populations of hundreds of millions. They are useless for describing a person.

The practically useful window is roughly 2023 to 2027 — children born in that stretch will have more in common with each other than with the far end of their own nominal cohort.

The dates that follow

Once you fix the boundary, a lot of other dates fall out of it:

YearWhat happens
2025Cohort opens
2028First Betas start nursery
2030First Betas start primary school
2035Cohort reaches roughly 16% of the world
2036First Betas start secondary school
2039Cohort closes
2043First Betas can vote
2047First Beta university graduates
2050Cohort is aged 11 to 25

If you are planning anything — a curriculum, a product line, a hiring pipeline — those are the dates to put in a calendar. 2030 is the first one that forces a decision, which means 2028 is when the decision has to be made.

The honest framing

Generation Beta is a fifteen-year container with a name attached. The container is real: those births happened, they can be counted, and the count matters.

What the container does not tell you is what the people inside it are like. That takes another decade of data, and anyone offering it now is guessing.

Frequently asked

When does Generation Beta start?

1 January 2025. Babies born from that date onward are Generation Beta.

When does Generation Beta end?

31 December 2039. The cohort runs fifteen years, the same length as Generation Alpha.

What generation is a baby born in 2024?

Generation Alpha, by one day in some cases. A December 2024 birth is Alpha and a January 2025 birth is Beta, which is exactly why boundaries should be treated as conventions rather than facts.

What comes after Generation Beta?

Nothing is formally named. Following the Greek sequence, Generation Gamma would run 2040 to 2054.
