Generation Z: the 1997–2009 cohort, and where its edges actually are

Which birth years count, why two reputable sources disagree about the end of the cohort, and how Gen Z lines up against the generations either side.

Quick answer

Generation Z covers births from 1997 to 2009 on the boundaries used across this site, Pew Research's start year and McCrindle's end year, which makes the cohort aged 17 to 29 in 2026. The main frameworks disagree about both ends: McCrindle starts the cohort in 1995 and Pew runs it to 2012.

Generation Z is the cohort most likely to be looking itself up, and the one most often described using figures that belong to a different set of birth years.

Neither end is settled. Pew Research begins Generation Z in 1997 and McCrindle in 1995; this site follows Pew. The end matters more. McCrindle closes it at 2009 and names Generation Alpha from 2010; Pew Research runs it to 2012 and never formally defines Generation Alpha at all. So a 2011 birth is Gen Alpha on this site and Gen Z in a Pew article, and a statistic quoted across the two is quietly comparing different people.

This hub keeps the boundaries visible rather than buried, because almost every confusing generational claim traces back to them.

Frequently asked

What years is Generation Z?

1997 to 2009 on this site, taking Pew's start year and McCrindle's end year. Pew Research runs it to 2012, and McCrindle starts it in 1995.

How old is Gen Z now?

Aged 17 to 29 in 2026. It is the youngest cohort with members old enough to be in full-time work.

Is 1996 Gen Z?

No. 1996 is the last Millennial year under both major frameworks, and 1997 is the first Gen Z year under both. People born either side of it had effectively the same childhood.

Are Gen Z the children of Millennials?

Mostly not. The arithmetic puts most Gen Z parents in Generation X. Millennials are the parents of Generation Alpha and, increasingly, Generation Beta.
