Gen Z

Am I Gen Z or a Millennial?

The 1996/1997 line decided in one step, with how many years from the boundary you actually sit and what the competing frameworks would say instead.

Quick answer

Anyone born from 1997 to 2009 is Generation Z and anyone born from 1981 to 1996 is a Millennial, so 1996 and 1997 sit one year apart on opposite sides of a line that describes nothing about either childhood.

Frequently asked

Is 1996 Gen Z or Millennial?

1996 is the last Millennial year under Pew Research, whose boundary this site uses, and 1997 is the first Gen Z year. McCrindle ends Generation Y in 1994, so a 1995 or 1996 birth is Gen Z under McCrindle.

Why do I feel like neither?

Because you are probably in the 1993–1998 band, where people grew up with the transition rather than on one side of it. The label "zillennial" exists for exactly this.

Which framework does this site use?

Pew Research up to the start of Gen Z and McCrindle from the end of Gen Z, because McCrindle is the only widely-cited framework that defines Generation Beta at all.
