Device-Free Mealtime Tracker
The household rule with the best ratio of compliance to benefit — measured across a week rather than aspirationally.
Five device-free meals out of nine is a 56% share and about 95 device-free hours a year — and with an adult on a phone at four of the nine, the limiting factor is rarely the children.

Frequently asked
Does eating together actually matter?
A large body of research associates shared family meals with better outcomes across several measures, with the usual caveat that families who eat together differ in other ways too. The narrower and safer claim is that a meal with a screen on contains far less conversation.
What about a television in the background?
It counts. Background television at meals reduces conversation in the same way a phone does, and it is more often overlooked because nobody chose to watch it.
How do I start if we currently do none?
One named meal rather than a general rule. Sunday lunch or the evening meal on two specific days works far better than an aspiration to do it always.
