Travel Screen Time Planner
A long journey budgeted rather than unlimited — because unlimited is what happens by default and it is worse for everyone.
A long journey goes wrong for two logistical reasons rather than behavioural ones — the battery runs out and the downloaded content will not play — and screens allowed in blocks with a defined end are handed back far more easily than an open allowance.

Frequently asked
Should screen rules apply while travelling?
Most families relax them and that is reasonable. What works better than relaxing them entirely is budgeting them: a defined number of blocks lasts longer and produces fewer arguments than an open allowance.
When should the first block start?
Not at departure. Starting roughly a quarter of the way in keeps the resource for the part of the journey where it is actually needed, which is rarely the first hour.
What is the most common planning failure?
Assuming connectivity. Downloading everything the night before, and carrying more battery than the plan requires, prevents almost every travel screen problem there is.
