Why "largest generation ever" is a headline, not a finding

The three largest living generations are within a few percent of each other, and the uncertainty on each estimate is wider than the gaps between them. Which one is "largest" depends on which boundary framework you use and which year you ask.

Under Pew's boundaries, which run Generation Z to 2012, the ranking changes outright.

Frequently asked

What is the largest generation?

Generation Alpha, at roughly 2.01 billion — but Generation Z and the Millennials are within a few percent, which is inside the margin of error.

How big will Generation Beta be?

About 2.1 billion by the time the cohort closes in 2039, on McCrindle's projection.

Why do generation sizes differ between sources?

Because the boundaries differ. Pew runs Generation Z to 2012; McCrindle ends it in 2009. That single difference moves hundreds of millions of people between cohorts.
