Medium variant
Medium variant is the central projection scenario in UN World Population Prospects, and the one used throughout this site.
What it assumes
That fertility continues along its recent trajectory toward convergence. The low and high variants shift fertility by roughly half a child either way.
Why it matters
Projections quoted without their variant are unfalsifiable. Every projected figure on this site is medium variant and says so.
