Cohort-component projection
Cohort-component projection is the standard method for projecting a population by ageing each birth cohort forward and applying fertility, mortality and migration.
How it works
Rather than growing a total population by a percentage, the method tracks each age group separately, applies age-specific birth and death rates, adds migration, and ages everyone forward a year.
The UN World Population Prospects uses this method. Our live counter uses a simplified version — see the methodology page for exactly what we do and do not model.
