Frequently asked

What year will my child be in in Scotland?

Scottish year groups run from 1 March to the end of February. A child born March to August starts P1 in the August of the year they turn 5; one born September to February starts the August before they turn 5. P1 to P7 is primary, S1 to S6 secondary.

Why does a 1 July or 2 July birthday matter in Northern Ireland?

A child who turns 4 between 1 September and 1 July starts P1 the next September. One who turns 4 between 2 July and 31 August waits until the September after their fifth birthday, so a 2 July birthday is the oldest in the next year group.

Can you defer P1 in Scotland?

Yes, if your child is still 4 on the date they are due to start, which covers most September to February birthdays. Since August 2023 every deferred child gets an extra year of funded early learning and childcare. Some councils set a deadline to apply.
