Quotable facts
Each fact below is the summary sentence of the page it links to, with its date. Please quote it with a link to that page, not to this one.
- Generation Beta starts on 1 January 2025 and ends on 31 December 2039. The boundary was set by demographer Mark McCrindle, who also named Generation Alpha. It is a research convention, not an official designation, and no statistical agency ratifies it. Source: When Does Gen Beta Start and End? The Dates, and Why They Are Contested, updated 9 August 2026.
- Generation Beta is projected at about 2.1 billion, but the straightforward arithmetic — 132.5 million births a year for fifteen years, minus child mortality — gives roughly 1.96 billion. The 2.1 billion figure assumes fertility slightly above where it currently sits. Source: How Big Will Generation Beta Be? Doing the Arithmetic Properly, updated 9 August 2026.
- Partly. Australia's ban on under-16s holding social media accounts took effect on 10 December 2025, and more than 5 million under-16 accounts were removed, deactivated or restricted by June 2026. But eSafety's early evaluation found 42.1% of under-16s still held an account in March 2026, down from 52.4%, mostly because platforms' age checks were weak. No platform had been fined as of early October 2026; investigations into five were ongoing. Source: Is Australia's Social Media Ban Working? What the First Ten Months Show, updated 1 November 2026.
- At least seven US state laws on children online are due to start on 1 January 2027, in Indiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Vermont and California, and New York's SAFE for Kids Act follows on 25 January 2027. Alabama's app store law and California's warning-label law have been challenged in court. Outside the US, the UK expects its under-16 social media rules in spring 2027 and Denmark proposes an under-15 limit from 1 July 2027. - As of 1 November 2026, 38 US states and the District of Columbia have a binding statewide law or policy restricting phones in school, and 24 of those states plus DC cover the whole school day ("bell to bell"). Five states only require districts to adopt a policy, five only encourage it, and Massachusetts and Mississippi have no statewide rule. - From 1 January 2027, California's AB 435 says a child aged 8 or older but under 16 may ride with the adult seat belt alone only if the belt passes all five steps of a fit test; otherwise the child must stay in a booster or car seat. Children under 8 still need a car seat or booster unless they are 4 ft 9 in or taller. The base fine is $100 for a first offence. - As of 2 November 2026, two 2026 picks are out. Dictionary.com named maxxing its Word of the Year on 25 October 2026, and Germany's youth word of the year (Jugendwort), announced by Langenscheidt on 10 October, is Ragebait. Collins, Cambridge, Macquarie, Oxford and Merriam-Webster have not announced yet; going by 2025 they follow between November and mid-December. How we work
Every figure is sourced and dated on its page; we prefer the primary source (the law, the government page, the dictionary's own announcement), and we leave a figure blank rather than estimate it. Read our editorial policy and methodology.
