Demographic transition
Definition
Demographic transition is the shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops.
The four stages
- High births, high deaths — population roughly stable.
- Deaths fall first — population grows fast.
- Births fall — growth slows.
- Both low — population stable or shrinking.
The caveat
It describes a tendency, not a law. Angola is 68% urban with fertility above 5, which the model does not predict. See [[Total fertility rate]].
