Frequently asked
Does a tie count as a branded uniform item?
Yes, a branded tie counts. Secondary and middle schools are allowed a fourth branded item only when one of their required items is a tie, so a tie plus three other branded items is the most they can require.
Does branded PE kit count towards the limit?
Yes. The limit covers every branded item a pupil must have over the school year, including PE kit, bags and items needed for clubs or activities the school runs.
Does the branded uniform limit apply to academies?
Yes. It applies to maintained schools, academies (including free schools), pupil referral units and non-maintained special schools in England. Schools in hospitals are not covered.
