Mid-Year New Arrival Induction
The first week for a pupil arriving mid-year, when the ordinary induction has already happened without them.
Mid-year arrivals are consistently under-supported because induction systems are built around September, and the two steps that matter most are chasing records from the previous school and booking a four-week check-in — the point where the social position settles and nobody is watching.
Mid-Year New Arrival Induction
Frequently asked
Why do mid-year arrivals struggle?
Because friendships, routines and curriculum sequences are already established, and the induction that would have introduced all three happened in September. Pupil mobility is associated with poorer outcomes, and repeated moves plus absent induction explain much of that.
What information should be requested?
Attainment, SEND, medical and safeguarding information specifically, with a date to chase. It routinely does not arrive on its own, and the gap is often discovered only when something goes wrong.
What is the most useful induction step?
A briefed buddy rather than a nominated one. A buddy who has been told what to actually do for a fortnight is a different intervention from a name written on a form.
