Early Years Childcare Cost Statistics (2026)
What childcare costs before school age, how much of it is public, and why it shows up in fertility statistics.
Roughly a third of the total cost of raising a child in the United States falls before school age, almost all of it childcare — a cost that is largely public in most other high-income countries and is the single biggest driver of the gap between them.

Why school starting age belongs on this page
The number of years a household pays for childcare is set by the school starting age. A country starting at four buys parents three fewer paid years than one starting at seven — and countries starting at seven generally provide subsidised early-years places to cover the gap.
Comparing raw childcare costs between countries without that context produces nonsense.
The fertility link
South Korea has the highest cost of childhood in Asia and the lowest fertility rate ever recorded. The association between childcare cost and fertility is strong and openly discussed in Korean policy debate. It is one factor among several, not a single cause.
Frequently asked
How much does childcare cost before school?
In the United States roughly a third of the total cost of raising a child to eighteen falls before school age, almost all of it childcare. In countries with subsidised provision the share is far lower.
Why is childcare cheaper in Germany than the US?
Because it is largely public. The gap between the two countries' total cost of childhood is almost entirely childcare and healthcare.
Does childcare cost affect birth rates?
It is strongly associated with lower fertility and is openly treated as a policy lever in several countries. It is one factor among several rather than a single cause.
