AI in Education Statistics (2026)
What is actually measured about AI use in schools, and what is still assertion.
Generative AI became publicly available in late 2022, when the oldest Generation Alpha children were twelve — making Alpha the first cohort to meet AI mid-schooling and Generation Beta the first born after it.
| Statistic | Figure | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generative AI made public | November 2022 | 2022 | OpenAI |
| Age of oldest Alphas at that point | 12 | 2022 | Derived |
| Generation Beta born after it | All of them | 2025–39 | Derived |
| First Betas start school | 2029–2032 | 2029 | Derived from UNESCO starting ages |
| Countries that banned then unbanned AI in schools | Multiple, within 12 months | 2023 | Press reporting |
| Typical reported student AI use for homework | 40–60% of secondary students | 2025 | National surveys |
| Teachers reporting AI use for planning or marking | Rising sharply, figures vary widely | 2025 | National surveys |
| Robust longitudinal evidence on learning outcomes | None yet | 2026 | Literature review |
Why this page is short
Because the honest evidence base is small. Generative AI in classrooms is roughly three years old. There is no longitudinal study of a cohort taught with it, and there cannot be one yet.
Almost everything published about AI and learning outcomes is projection, vendor material, or a survey of opinion rather than a measurement of learning. This page will grow as real evidence arrives.
Frequently asked
How many students use AI for homework?
Reported rates for secondary students commonly fall between 40% and 60%, but survey methods differ enough that the range should be treated as indicative.
Does AI help or harm learning?
There is no robust longitudinal evidence yet. The technology is about three years old in classrooms and no cohort has been followed through schooling with it.
Which generation is the first AI-native one?
Generation Beta. Every member was born after generative AI became publicly available.
