Gen Alpha slang · Emoticon
xd
Xd is Gen Alpha slang for a laughing face — hysterical laughter.
Where it came from
Not an acronym. Turned sideways, X is a pair of eyes squeezed shut and D a wide grin. How-To Geek places it in 1990s or early-2000s chat rooms and message boards; the earliest dated reference it gives is a 2003 Urban Dictionary entry.
Tone check
Harmless. Wiktionary notes it is more popular outside English-speaking countries.
