Where it came from
A TikTok trend that peaked in spring 2024. Its earlier history is disputed: a linguist told Fortune it may have started as a compliment in Black London slang, and a professor told Today.com a link to US pop culture is hard to confirm.
Tone check
Not safe. Therapists quoted by Fortune and Today called it harmful, and Lizzo called the trend fatphobic. If a child is called it, treat it as body-shaming.
