US teens spend a lot more time on social media than many parents realise. Gallup found that the average US teen spends 4.8 hours per day on social media across seven popular apps. That is more time than many teens spend on homework, hobbies, or watching television.
The figure is not the same for every teen. Just over half of US teens, 51%, spend at least four hours a day on social media. Time rises with age, from 4.1 hours a day for 13-year-olds to 5.8 hours a day for 17-year-olds. Girls average 5.3 hours a day, compared with 4.4 hours a day for boys.
YouTube and TikTok take up most of that time. Teens average 1.9 hours a day on YouTube and 1.5 hours a day on TikTok, while Instagram accounts for 0.9 hours a day. In other words, two apps alone can fill more than three hours of a teen's day.
Parents can still make a real difference. Gallup found that teens whose parents strongly agree they restrict screen time spend 1.8 hours less on social media each day than teens whose parents do not restrict it at all. That finding points to a simple, practical step: agree clear limits together, keep phones out of bedrooms at night, and set screen-free times for meals and family time.
Start with a calm conversation, not a sudden ban. Ask your teen which apps eat up most of their time, agree a daily limit that feels fair, and review it together after a week. Small, steady limits work better than strict rules that no one follows.
